Just under 100 days to go until Antwerp’s biggest running event of the autumn: the TREK® Antwerp Marathon on Sunday 18 October. The countdown has begun with the announcement of the routes. The marathon and half marathon will stick to last year’s successful formula. For the 10K, the port will be swapped for a breathtaking route right through the historic city centre. All distances finish at the MAS.
Whereas in previous editions the 10K largely wound its way through the Port of Antwerp, the organisers are now fully committed to maximising the experience and atmosphere for both runners and supporters. The revamped 10K will have its own unique starting point on Orteliuskaai. From the start, runners turn immediately right into the beating heart of Antwerp. This provides a unique stretch across the Grote Markt (which only the 10K runners get to enjoy) and through Kloosterstraat, joining the (half) marathon route just before Zuidpark and following it all the way to the finish at the MAS.
For the marathon and half marathon, the familiar and successful formula remains unchanged. Participants can once again look forward to a fast and flat route past numerous Antwerp highlights. Thanks to the strategic loops, the huge crowds of fans can cheer on their favourite runners several times. Dozens of entertainment points along the route guarantee that unique, rousing Antwerp atmosphere from the start right through to the MAS.
“The feedback after the previous edition was very positive, so we’re keen to carry on in the same vein,” says Greg Broekmans of organiser Golazo. “The double loop through the city creates an extra special atmosphere for the runners and is also greatly appreciated by the supporters. The 10-kilometre runners also wanted to be able to enjoy more of that city atmosphere, and this revamped route fully meets that need.”
15,000 runners have already registered
15,000 runners have already signed up, 4,000 of whom have entered the full marathon. Registration is still open for all distances. Anyone wishing to run the 10 km should not wait too long; there are just over 1,000 starting places left.
“The Antwerp Marathon is much more than just a sporting event,” says Antwerp’s mayor Els van Doesburg. “It’s a day when the whole of Antwerp comes alive. Whether you’re running for a personal best or cheering on family and friends: on 18 October, we’ll make it another unforgettable edition together. Registration is open, so now is the perfect time to take on that challenge.”
“Anyone who secured a race number early on is probably well on track with their training for the TREK® Antwerp Marathon,” says Stijn De Rooster, Councillor for Sport for the City of Antwerp. “Those who are still undecided will hopefully cast aside any lingering doubts following the announcement of the fast, clean and ‘spectator-friendly’ city course, and have nearly 100 days left to get ready for Antwerp’s premier running event of the autumn. And just like last year, I’m delighted to be bringing along two outfits for the occasion. For my half-marathon run, I’ll be joining the many fans who create a fantastic atmosphere year after year and cheer all the runners on towards the finish line.”
